Several bands of manifold genres rocked official SXSW showcases in style

With roughly 2,000 bands playing at this year’s annual South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival, it was exceptionally challenging for most people to pick which acts to see and, of course, how to travel to the numerous venues hosting them. If you’re like most festival- goers, you didn’t quite get around to catching all the bands you’d hoped to see. But if you did, then bravo to you — you, sir or madam, have mastered one of the most elaborate music fests in the world.

Auditorium Shores offered a variety of free music and beautiful weather during the South by Southwest music festival this year. The March 16 show started off with the Tender Mercies, followed by Diamond Rugs, and finished off with headlining act the Counting Crows.

Austin Community College students Chris Hadley and John Fichter played several shows all over town during the South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival with their funky soul band The LaRues. Their group can’t stop moving, and neither can anyone within earshot of this local sensation that delivers a classic funk sound flooded with rich vocal harmonies.

Austin Community College professor Jessie Torrisi and her band performed at the pre- South by Southwest (SXSW) “Gabrieldoes...South by South East” party March 7 at CTC Garden. Hesher is grungy film success

The movie Hesher, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Rainn Wilson, and Natalie Portman, tells the story of a family who lose their loving wife and mother, and are now trying to cope with their emotions. Gordon-Levitt plays Hesher,  an obscene metal head, who comes in the  family's life and unexpectedly, for better or for worse, rocks their world. Gordon-Levitt breaks out in the role of Hesher, really doing the dead-beat, malnourished, chain-smoking character (continued)

Midnight Riot competes to win

Midnight Riot gets their voices heard at several battle of the bands.

Alternative rock band Midnight Riot competed in the Emo's Battle of the Bands on March 27. A Bag of Hammers inspires

A Bag of Hammers, starring Jason Ritter and Alan Sandvig, is an offbeat comedy about two lifelong friends who work as valet employees, but steal cars as a side job. The film was part of the spotlight premiere categories featured at the SXSW film festival. First-time director Brian Crano, along co-screenwriter Jake Sandvic, brought to the festival a film that is not only witty, but inspiring. Source Code movie brings action

Source Code begins with a jolting start. The film premiered on March 11 at the Paramount Theater. It was the opening night film for SXSW film festival. It was directed by Duncan Jones, who other film Moon, which premiered at SXSW in 2009. The story begins quickly, taking place on a Chicago train. Dallas Green colours Austin

City and Colour, the solo project for Dallas Green, performed at the IFC Crossroads House on Thursday for SXSW, while hundreds of people waited in line just to hear a song from the singer/songwriter.
