The Texas Capitol building was on lockdown after gunshots were fired on the south steps at about 12:15 p.m. today.

After walking with the officer to the door and watching him tackle the suspect, Holloman and her mother ran to the third floor.

"We heard pow pow pow five times, so the officer next to me, I guess he didn't hear anything, so I said 'I think there is something outside',"  Holloman said.

According to Holloman, the suspect was a six foot tall hispanic man in his 20's with short brown hair.

"DPS troopers immeditately took him into custody. He has been transported to the Travis County Sherriff's Office Jail," DPS Sokesperson Tela Mange said.

DPS has released the suspect's name as Fausto Cardenas and said he was carrying a small calliber handgun.

The suspect's motive has not been released, however according to Houston Sen. Dan Patrick's facebook page he said that Cardenas visited his office shortly before the shooting occured.

"Moments earlier the alleged shooter had come to my office in Austin acting strangely. My staff called security and he left. Shortly after shots fired," Patrick wrote at 12:58 p.m.
