U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett held a press conference

from the front steps of the Rio Grande Campus

on Tuesday afternoon. The conference was held to

publicize the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act

that was included in the recently passed health care

law.

In his speech Doggett gave background information

on how much money this will provide to Texas colleges,

community colleges nationwide and directly to students. He

also commented on how the "financial

foolishness" of the current system will be solved

through the direct lending program.

"I'm still kind absorbing the information.

I'm probably going to go home and look up the details

on how I'm going to benefit," Jackson

Pritchett, Japanese major, said following the event.

Student representatives from several area colleges

also gave short statements in favor of the Act. Those

included ACC Student Government President Josh Bacak, Zach

Haller from Huston-Tillotson University, Scott Parkson from

The University of Texas at Austin and Garrett Hall from St.

Edward's University.
