After a tumultuous and controversy filled start to the semester, the Student Government Association has gotten back on track and is moving forward to represent student interests following the election of three new officers during an Oct. 7 meeting held at the Highland Business Center.

Greetings fellow Riverbats, Well, here we are off to a bright start in a new semester. Student Government Association certainly hopes that everyone's classes are going well. Last semester, SGA brought many things forward for our fellow students. We hosted Movember and Frostbite.
After publicly announcing their endorsement of the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act last year, the Student Government Association (SGA) is now focusing on promoting the act by garnering support from ACC students and administration leaders.

Former SGA Vice President Sophia Downing assumes presidency, will nominate new vice president on Oct
The former SGA Vice President, Sophia Downing, is now president, following former President Jorge Amador's resignation from the office of SGA president.
Jorge Amador announced his resignation from the position of Student Government Association (SGA) President at an SGA meeting Friday, Oct. 8 at Austin Community College's Highland Business Center. Amador was elected in the spring semester of 2010. He was unopposed for the SGA position.
Voting for Student Government candidates began on April 12 and will continue to April 25.

Student Government Association is holding their 2010 elections April 12 through April 25 and currently there are still many positions in which no one is running and others in which only one person is running.
Running unopposed for President is Jorge Amador, and for Vice-President is Sophia Downing. For the Director of Communications (currently held by Downing) only Chelsey Williams is running, and only Dylan Pera has applied to be Parliamentarian.
The proposal to move late registration and the add/drop period to the week before classes begin was altered at a recent Academic and Campus Affairs Council (ACAC) meeting. The new proposal would move late registration to the week before class but keep a two day add/drop period during the first week of class. The new proposal was sent out to the employee associations and the Student Government Association (SGA) after the March 5 ACAC meeting.
The Student Government Association passed a resolution on Feb. 19 strongly opposing the proposed changes to the registration schedule.
"The current Add/Drop Dates benefit all students," states the resolution, "removing the Add/Drop Date could negatively affect all students; especially the students effected by the Texas Legislature bill stating that students who enroll in public colleges and universities beginning in fall 2007 and thereafter may not withdraw from more than six classes during their undergraduate college career."

Campaigning will occurs during March 29 through April 25 for the Austin Community College's Student Government Association election. The SGA has just accepted the necessary election packages for students wanting to run for office with SGA. Now those candidates will conduct interviews with an SGA officer. After these interviews are conducted and the Office of Student Life checks their GPAs to ensure they meet the required 2.5 GPA and are in good standing prior to the election, the SGA advisor and Student Life director will approve candidates to participate in the rest of the election process.
SGA gathers signatures to back undocumented students’ chance for a college education
The Student Government Association (SGA) is now publicly endorsing the DREAM Act, which stands for Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act. It's currently being debated before the House of Representative and the Senate. If passed, it would allow undocumented students (the children of illegal immigrants) that are high school graduates and have been in the country at least five years before the bill was enacted to gain a conditional permanent residency, according the bill's text.
In an effort to help with the the rescue and rebuilding process in Haiti, the Student Government Association (SGA) has partnered with Student Life and hip-hop artist NIKKAGE to plan the Haiti Relief Concert that will be held from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Feb. 27 at the Eastview Campus.

The Student Government Association (SGA) has formed a DREAM. Act Committee in order to study the effect of the DREAM act on undocumented students at ACC. This committee was formed after Jose Torres, President of the University of Leadership, a group that is trying to mobilize support for the DREAM Act at colleges, made a presentation about the DREAM act at an SGA meeting on Oct. 30.
Austin Community College's Student Government Association partnered with the Mac Users Club to educate students about the election on Nov. 4. Rio Grande Campus Senator Bri Minnis approached Kevin Haley, president of the Mac Users Club and Apple Campus Representative for the Austin area, with the idea of using Mac computers to offer information to student voters.
Burnett wins presidency
Voting for Student Government Association positions ended last Friday with what was one of Austin Community College's largest turnouts in recent history. In previous years, less than one percent of the student body contributed to the election process. But those numbers appear to be trending upward, according to SGA advisor Marisa Walden.
One Austin Community College student has a chance of sitting on the Board of Trustees come May if he announces his candidacy. Student Government Association Senate Chair Robert Daley has not formally announced, but has expressed interest in filing for a position on the ballot.

The Texas Junior College Student Government Association hosted their second Community College Student Day on Thursday, Feb. 22 in an effort to make the Texas Legislature aware of the needs of junior colleges and community colleges statewide. TJCSGA President Damien Tovar of El Paso said the event is intended to, "make sure [students'] lawmakers are impressed with the role that community colleges play in our state's economy and economic development.

Joshua Michael Bacak was elected the new student body president for ACC. Bacak was a senator for the South Austin Campus before running for President and also organized and led "Black Out," a student game night, and one of the biggest student led events. "I feel that I have the tools and experience from the five years in the Marine Corps, actually leading people, to excel," said Bacak of his qualifications for the position as President.

Over the winter break, our Student Government Association president Brad Burnett had the opportunity to go on an all expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the inauguration and gala. ACC and the Center for Public Policy and Political Studies funded the trip.
