As the end of the fall semester draws near and the holidays inch closer, many student organizations have begun brainstorming how they can help those in need. Austin Community College's Silver Star Children's Literacy Group have come up with an idea to help area children.

Sponsored by Austin Community College's Transfer Academy program, 28 ACC students, who plan to transfer to a four-year university, were given the opportunity to visit Southwestern University (SU) and the University of Texas at Austin (UT) thanks to the Tour de Transfer trip Nov. 11.
ACC students were able to experience the two different, but local universities' environments during the tour in Austin and Georgetown, Texas. Students on the tour were informed that both institutions have articulation agreements with ACC.
New council to enhance student involvement in rules, regulations concerns for clubs, organizations
Growing pains and learning curves marked the Oct. 28 meeting of the Student Organizations and Clubs Council (SOCC), as newly elected officers received a crash course in parliamentary procedure and handled major items of business.
New club encourages entrepreneurial growth
As its name implies, the newly formed ACC Incubator has taken its place among ACC's clubs and organizations to nurture and encourage students in the creative use of their talents through business ventures and community collaborations.
ACC student and local business woman Wendy Lopez is the president and founder of the Incubator. Lopez said that her motivation for starting the club was to help students who are starting out in their careers, just as she received help as a young entrepreneur.
Generous donations converted academic dreams into reality as the ACC Foundation awarded over half a million dollars in scholarships to more than 300 students during the 2011-2012 academic year.
ACC Foundation Executive Director, Stephanie Dempsy, said that donors have been more generous than ever despite tough economic times, due in part to community appreciation of ACC's mission, which includes producing trained professionals for the workforce.

In the midst of a lawsuit between a Kyle resident and ACC, a judge has ruled that the plaintiff, Ray Wolbrecht, must pay $3 million in bonds in order to keep the lawsuit going, according to the Hays Free Press. Because of Wolbrecht's continuation in the case, the college has requested that he cover the bond in order to pay for "any damages or increased costs to ACC and its taxpayers caused by his continued participating in the case, which would have the effect of delaying further the issuance of debt needed to construct the Hays Campus," ACC attorney Coppy Caputo, told the Hays Free Press.
Two Austin area high school, Reagan High School and Lyndon B. Austin Chamber backs ACC initiative
Earlier this month it was reported on the Austin American-Statesman education blog that the Austin Chamber of Commerce would be working to improve the student success rate of students who complete college and earn a certificate or degree at ACC by 50 percent.

The Texas Community College Association (TCCTA) will be completing their yearly faculty salary survey this month.
The Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Accountability conducted an online survey that will be used to create a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) for the College. A QEP is a 10-year plan that the college will implement to help improve an area of student learning.
Fifty percent more students applied for aid than last fall
This semester, there was an unprecedented increase in applications for financial aid. Last fall, 11,609 students applied for financial aid at Austin Community College, compared to this fall's, 17,470 applicants. This is a 50 percent increase.
"We've had to work weekends, and we've had to definitely alter schedules to compensate for additional student body," Financial Aid Supervisor Jason Briseno said.

Faculty and donors celebrated the opening of the Hill Country University Center (HCUC) on Sep. 23 in Fredericksburg.
The HCUC program began at Fredericksburg high school in 2003 in portable trailers. Since then, the program has expanded due to the support of HEB, Texas Tech, Austin Community College, Concordia, and Angelo State.
Nearly 4,500 more students than last fall
Austin Community College's official enrollment tally for fall 2009 is 40,248 credit students, an increase of more than 12 percent compared with fall 2008, when ACC had 35,798 credit students according to the Public Information and College Marketing Department.
Washington Monthly magazine published their latest ranking of the top 50 community colleges in the country in August and Austin Community College did not make the list. When the periodical released their first ranking of community colleges in 2007, it was the first of its kind.

The Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act (SAFRA) is already changing the way students pays for higher education. It was included in Public law no. 111-148 which is probably best known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett held a press conference on Rio Grande campus on Tuesday, Mar. 30 regarding these changes.
The proposal to move late registration and the add/drop period to the week before classes begin was altered at a recent Academic and Campus Affairs Council (ACAC) meeting. The new proposal would move late registration to the week before class but keep a two day add/drop period during the first week of class. The new proposal was sent out to the employee associations and the Student Government Association (SGA) after the March 5 ACAC meeting.
