Charging stations installed for electric cars

Over the winter break, the ACC Sustainability department installed electric vehicle charging (EVC) stations on campuses and locations housing college administrative offices in Austin and Round Rock. The charging stations are available for use by students and the public, and are part of the Green Car Parking program.

ACC launches mobile website

On Jan. 17, the Austin Community College District launched the mobile version of its website to provide students, faculty and staff with immediate, on-the-go access to essential tools and resources.

Skanska USA awarded $19.7 million contract for Elgin Campus

Construction firm Skanska USA announced on Nov. 30 that is has been awarded a contract from the Austin Community College District to construct the college's newest campus in Elgin, Texas.

The contract, worth $19.7 million, will be managed by Skanska's San Antonio office. The construction firm will provide preconstruction and construction manager services for ACC's ninth campus which, officially broke ground Nov. 15.

Photography, RTF students to present work at showcases

Several Austin Community College students will be given the opportunity to showcase work produced over the semester at showcases throughout the end of the semester.

All events are open to the public, including student showcases for the photography and radio, television and film departments.

Student art for sale at on- campus gift shop

Those interested in purchasing art as holiday gifts this holiday season can visit the Austin Community College Art gift shop to buy high quality art pieces that were created by students, staff and faculty.

The gift shop opened Dec. 2 and will continue through Dec. 10 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Rio Grande Campus Art Gallery located in building 3000.

Rio Review student publication to be released at party at RGC

Austin Community College's creative writing department will be hosting their release party for this semester's Rio Review student literary journal at 7 p.m. on Nov. 30 in the Rio Grande Campus Gallery Theater. The event is free and open to the public.

The Rio Review features poems, prose, screenplays, and artwork by students and is sponsored by the creative writing department.

The journal is published twice a year during the spring and the fall semesters.

Spring registration for classes currently open to all students

Registration for spring semester classes is now open for all current, former and new students.

Classes for the spring semester begin Jan. 17, and students can register using Austin Community College's online services website.

ACC moves forward with design, planning Hays Campus

After a lawsuit against the college was dropped in August, Austin Community College started planning the design and construction of Hays Campus. The project is in the middle of the schematic design phase, according to a campus update posted on ACC's website.

"On October 26, ACC held an Internal Steering Committee meeting, and the architectural firm Gensler presented the Phase I proposed floor plans and site plan to illustrate the shape of the building footprint and the relationship between programmed department areas on each floor," the update stated. The committee approved the proposal.

ACC administration are working with individual departments to receive feedback on what each department needs at the campus.

A final set of floor plans will be presented again for approval by the departments, at which point, Gensler will begin developing building elevations and a 3D rendering," according to the update. "We are targeting early December for the completion of schematic design."

Veterans Day event to be held at Riverside Campus

In celebration of Veterans Day, Austin Community College students who are veterans or currently enrolled in the military will be presenting their creative writing works at the free event "Honoring the Service" Veterans Day Reading at 7 p.m. on Nov. 11 at the Riverside Campus in building G, room 8500 which is open to public.

ACC President Richard Rhodes launches podcast

Recently appointed President and CEO Richard Rhodes spoke to Brette Lea, executive director of Public Information and College Marketing, about his first impressions of Austin Community College and the keys to student success in a podcast published online on Oct. 28.

Students invited to attend tour of local universities

Students interested in transferring to the University of Texas at Austin or Southwestern University in Georgetown are invited to attend Tour de Transfer on Nov. 11.

Tour de Transfer is an Austin Community College sponsored event hosted by the ACC Transfer Academy, where registered students will have the opportunity to visit prospective universities, according to Riverside Campus Student Services Dean Virginia Fraire.

Spring registration open for current and former students

Registration for the spring semester is currently open for Austin Community College students.

ACC board votes to move election date to November

Austin Community College's board of trustees will hold elections in November 2012 instead of May 2011 based on provisions in Senate Bill 100. According to board of trustees chair Barbara Mink, whose second term ends in 2012, the change will align ACC's elections with national elections and those of Travis County and Austin Independent School District. Mink said this consolidation of election dates should increase voter turnout and result in savings, as ACC will share election costs with the other governing bodies holding elections at that time.

Students invited to meet with board of trustees members at open forums hosted by SGA

Student Government Association senators will be hosting a series of meetings at various campuses inviting students to meet and talk to Austin Community College board of trustee members.

Trustees at each meeting will explain what the roles of an ACC Board member are, and provide information about current issues at the ACC board level.

Students are encouraged to ask trustees questions, comment on their experiences and share their concerns as ACC students. Forums are held throughout the year, one at each campus at varying times.

Meetings will take place through out the school year and students can view meeting minutes and agendas online at austincc. edu/s4/studentforums.

Upcoming meetings taking place during the fall semester include the following dates: 2 p.m. Oct. 25 at Rio Grande Campus student lounge, 6 p.m. Nov. 3 at Riverside Campus student lounge and Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. at Building 2000 in room 2131.

Golf tournament to raise money for student emergency fund

An opportunity for students to enjoy the golf is coming up. The Sixth Annual Austin Community College Scramble will be on Friday, October 7, at the Riverside Golf Course located at 1020 Grove Blvd.

College organizes aid for victims of Bastrop wildfires

The ACC community will lend a helping hand to victims of the Bastrop wildfires through volunteer relief efforts on Saturday October 8.

Fall enrollment at an all time high due to consistent growth

Despite the economic downturn, ACC's enrollment continues to grow by leaps and bounds as the addition of 1,000 new students brings enrollment totals to 45,100 this semester, which is a 2 percent increase over last fall.

Groundbreaking date announced for Elgin

Groundbreaking for Austin Community College's newest campus has been announced to take place at 10 a.m. on Nov. 15 at 1501 U.S. Highway 290 in Eligin. The campus is slated to be open Fall 2013.

ACC purchased 98 acres on U.S. Highway 290 and County Line Road to build Elgin Campus, near Elgin High School, after Elgin ISD residents approved annexation last fall, becoming eligible for ACC's in-district tuition rate and paving the way for a new full- service college campus, according to a press release issued by the college.

"This will be ACC's 9th comprehensive campus and the first for Bastrop County," former ACC president/CEO Steve Kinslow said in a press release. "The campus will bring programs designed to support Elgin's plans for economic development and will increase access to higher education and workforce training for residents— fundamental to building a stronger middle class."

Planned campus features include a three-story brick-and-curtain wall structure of approximately 65,000 square feet, a library, student support services, testing center, and a computer lab. The first phase is expected to accommodate up to 1,500 students and will offer core curriculum/academic transfer courses, agriculture-related studies, graphic design, visual communication and digital media programs, applied technologies, and more.

Fall intramural sports and recreation begin

Students seeking to get active this semester can begin registering for Austin Community College's Intramural Sports and Recreation program hosted by the Office of Student Life.

The program offers many sports for both men and women, including men and women's soccer, basketball, volleyball and tennis. Students interested can sign up as individuals, or "free agents" for each league, or as a group with other ACC students.

Registration is available at austincc.edu/rec, where instructions for signing up are listed. A schedule of upcoming events and an overview of the Sports and Recreation program in general are also available on the website.

Students can also contact ACC Student Life and Intramurals Coordinator Tracy Partin for more information by visiting the Student Life center at the Rio Grande Campus, or through his email, tpartin@austincc.edu.

As of October this year, Partin has served Intramural Sports and Recreations student life coordinator for a full year.

Partin is excited about the direction the program is taking.

"I want to see the intramurals program grow," Partin said who stresses that program is "for fun and its [for students of] all levels , not just for high level people."

Peer to peer group offers veterans support

Veterans' Peer to Peer Group is offering resources this fall semester for returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans as they transition from battlefield to the home front.

The group began the semester on Sept. 8 with one-hour meeting at Northridge Campus which included introductions to several educational and readjustment services for veterans registered at ACC.

Veteran's Peer to Peer Group will meet every Thursday until December 15, from 10-11 a.m. at the Northridge Campus, Bldg. 1000, Room 1117, according to the group's advisor Marshall Bennett.

Meetings will be facilitated by a trained Operation Endurance Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom and all veterans are invited to join the group and can contact at 512 223 4845 or cbennet3@ austincc.edu.

Students wishing to attend a meeting who need accommodations should coordinate with the Office for Students with Disabilities.

"The idea is that peers help other peers, and they can share information," Bennett said.

"We want to include experts from the community too," added David Dominguez, a former marine and Vietnam War veteran who joined the first meeting with the intention of improving veterans contact in order to help each other.

Susan Bickford, a Navy veteran majoring Social Work, was the facilitator for the peer to peer group's first meeting.

Bickford brought information to the meeting that included how to get readjustment counseling services, benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs, services from Samaritan Center, and Metro Transportation maps as resources for veterans. A new $3 million grant program to help Texas Veterans buy, build, rehabilitate or rent a home, was also introduced at the meeting as part of the new state program Housing-4-Texas Heroes.

"The freedoms we all enjoy are the direct result of the service and the sacrifice of our veterans, who valued their country and their communities, above themselves," Gov. Rick Perry said in a statement announcing the program.

RESA to host final event

The Renewable Energy Students Association (RESA) will host its last event of the spring semester on May 26 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Eastview Campus. According to Jason Shaw, co-chair of RESA, the first 45 minutes of the event, titled "Renewable Energy Roundtable Discussion," will give students the opportunity to meet with representatives in the field.

Japanese class canceled

14 students will no longer be able to attend the Japan study abroad trip scheduled for this summer due to the concerns arising from the recent earthquake and tsunami.   The program was cancelled on April 26 due to growing concern over the safety of the island's food, water, and power sources, as well as the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, according to a press release issued by the college. 1 comment

Waitlist option now available for students

Some students registering for summer classes can now place themselves on a waitlist if the course they want to register for is full. Austin Community College announced on April 7 that they have begun testing a pilot program that will eventually encompass all classes and serve as an aid to those wanting to register for high demand classes.

Board approves tuition raises due to state cuts

Austin Community College board of trustees voted April 4 to raise all student tuition by $5 per credit hour to help offset significant state budget cuts outlined in HB1 and SB1 budget bills. This change will go into effect immediately for the Summer 2011 semester.

Activity board to host first 5K Riverbat Run

Presidential finalists to attend college forums

Blood drive to be hosted at Round Rock, Northridge campuses

The Office of Student Life at the Round Rock Campus will partner with the Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas for a blood drive April 6 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Northridge and Round Rock campuses. Christopher Stevenson, community service director of the Student Activity Advisory Board, approached the non-profit organization to put on the drive.

Summer registration start dates updated

ACC has announced an update to the upcoming summer 2011 registration calendar. While the start date for new students to register will remain unchanged, a credit-specific system has been put in place to give current and former students priority. Open registration for current and former students will run from April 7 to May 18, and students with the highest amount of credit hours will be eligible to register the earliest.

Library seeks tattooed students

Library Services is looking for students with literary-related tattoos for their next READ campaign poster, "Tattooed ACC Students." The campaign was implemented to support literacy as well as to promote the library's services for students. Students with tattoos are encouraged to submit photos by the end of February.

Learning lab tutors to meet, collabotrate

Learning Lab Managers will hold their yearly tutoring conference at the Eastview Campus on Feb. 18. The conference, "Success by Design: A Collaborative Approach to Student Retention," will offer 35 presentations on topics ranging from stoichiometry to developmental writing.

A memo regarding safety on campus was released on Jan. 27 by ACC President Steven Kinslow and Vice President of Student Support and Success Systems Kathleen Christensen in response to the recent shooting in Tuscon, Arizona where the shooter attended Pima Community College.

Board approves Capital Metro bus service at Cypress Creek

The Cypress Creek Campus will now have Capitol Metro transit bus service. The college's board of trustees approved the agreement, which covers one year of service from Capitol Metro, on Monday, Jan. 24. The cost will be $19,224.97, and will be paid for through the college's $1-per-credit-hour sustainability fee.

ACC student leaders are attending the 63rd biannual Texas Community College Day event at the Texas State Capitol on Feb. 2. Student leaders from several clubs and organizations were selected to attend the event after filling out a form online and explaining how they represent ACC as a student leader.

Dance performance based on semester long choreography class

The dance department is hosting this year's Fall Dance Informance on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m.. The event will take place at Rio Grande Campus in Room 130. ACC students will be presenting works from their fall semester choreography class. The performance is a graded portion of the class.

Study shows straight ticket voting at highest rate in years

ACC's Center for Public Policy and Political Studies (CPPPS) released a study that indicates the Nov. 2 gubernatorial election had the highest amount of straight ticket voting in 12 years. Straight ticket voting occurs when a voter picks candidates on a ballot according to what party the candidate is affiliated with.

Students to be inducted into international honor society

Students will be inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society on Dec. 4 at Rio Grande Campus in room 201. Family and friends of the inductees are invited. The current officers will be released at the ceremony, and the new officers will be inducted.

Student founded literacy program to host book drive

Clubs at ACC will have a chance to earn $100 toward a party by donating children's books to the Silver Star Children's Literacy Project. On Dec. 8 the clubs will present their books to Travis County Sherriff Greg Hamilton. The group was founded by student Avy Gonzalez who is currently the president.

Library survey polls students on their technology usage

The Library Services started an online survey called "How Do You Use Technology?" on March 22 and will close for data collection on April 16.
The objective of the survey is to "have an idea of how technologically savvy ACC students are, what are the popular on-line resources and electronic equipments they use, and then decide which resources the library will use or develop in order to attend the students," said Adrian Erb, ACC e-Resources Librarian.

Automotive Technology Dept. set to open in San Marcos

Austin Community College's Automotive Technology Department will now be offering courses in San Marcos. To welcome this new development, ACC along with the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a Ribbon Cutting and Dedication ceremony from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 8 at ACC's San Marcos Goodnight Center in San Marcos. A light luncheon and tours of the facilities will follow the ceremony.

Bob Livingston brings musical diversity to ACC with free show

Accent, Life4u, Rio Review bring home publication awards

Accent's staff recently came home with 31 awards at this year's Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) state convention. Seventeen students made the trip to Kerrville where they attended workshops and competed in on-site competitions with 47 different Texas colleges. The Accent team won five on-site contests and 26 mailed entries contests. The contests featured categories in various journalism mediums: Newspaper, Online and Magazine.

New female focused classes to be offered in solar installation

As more solar energy companies are forming in Austin, Austin Community College will be offering two women focused classes. The two classes on solar installation will start on March 22 and will meet on Mondays and Wednesday at 6 p.m. to 9 p.m at Highland Business Center.

SGA Candidates preparing for election campaigns

Campaigning will occurs during March 29 through April 25 for the Austin Community College's Student Government Association election. The SGA has just accepted the necessary election packages for students wanting to run for office with SGA. Now those candidates will conduct interviews with an SGA officer. After these interviews are conducted and the Office of Student Life checks their GPAs to ensure they meet the required 2.5 GPA and are in good standing prior to the election, the SGA advisor and Student Life director will approve candidates to participate in the rest of the election process.

ACC Students to participate in interactive forum on jobs

Even with the recent announcement of new jobs opening up in Austin in thanks to Facebook, it still doesn't change the fact that more students are still worried about getting a job after college graduation.
Austin Community College's Center for Public Policy, the Economics Department and the Center for Student Political Studies are hosting an interactive forum on March 10 at 6 p.m. called "The Jobs Summit, Will I have a Job after Graduation" for students to discuss solutions for those post college job searches especially in this current poor economy. The event is in Eastview Campus Multipurpose Hall, Room 8500.

Texas law officials to round up those with warrants on March 6

It's that time again. The Great Texas Warrant Roundup will begin on March 6 and will run to March 13. Representatives from the more than 250 law enforcement agencies and courts from around Texas will be combining forces to gather those of you that have outstanding warrants from traffic and parking tickets as well as city ordinance and penal code violations to higher charge warrants.

Students support the DREAM Act

SGA gathers signatures to back undocumented students’ chance for a college education

The Student Government Association (SGA) is now publicly endorsing the DREAM Act, which stands for Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act.  It's currently being debated before the House of Representative and the Senate. If passed, it would allow undocumented students (the children of illegal immigrants) that are high school graduates and have been in the country at least five years before the bill was enacted to gain a conditional permanent residency, according the bill's text.

Students participate in mock health care panel at State Capitol

Students from Austin Community College and the University of Texas teamed up for a mock health care panel on Feb. 13 at the Texas Capitol. Playing the roles of Republicans and Democrats, the students discussed issues of the health care debate that is currently going on in Washington: primary care expansion, patient safety, hospital staffing, and healthcare for the uninsured and the underinsured. Students also heard expert testimonies from both sides of these issues.
 

Pinnacle Parking Lot update

A new parking lot is currently under construction at Pinnacle Campus. Projected to open for the fall 2010 semester, it will provide an additional 440 parking spots for students, faculty and staff.
In the meantime, students can catch a five to ten minute ride to campus with the help of a free shuttle servce. Located at the former Albertson's parking area in Oak Hill Plaza, shuttles will run throughout the day. The first shuttle starts at 7 a.m. and the last runs at 8 p.m..
 

Spring Enrollment Increases

This semester is the fourth consecutive semester where more Austin Community College students are starting here to get there. Compared to Spring 2009, this year's enrollment broke a record with 41,050 students enrolled. Last year's spring semester had 36,601 students enrolled

Neighboring communities look into joining taxing district

With the high enrollment numbers for this semester and a brand new campus set to open in the fall, the Austin Community College District has experienced record growth and might be about to get even bigger. Five communities in the ACC service district, the North Hays Effort, which is a collaboration between Buda and Kyle, and Bastrop ISD, Elgin ISD, and McDade ISD independently, are in the petition phase of the annexation process.

Rio Grande Campus set to expand

According to a press release, the ACC Board of Trustees unanimously approved the purchasing of three tracts of land adjacent to the Rio Grande Campus. "Basically we purchased an office building we were already leasing," said Executive Vice President of Finance and Administration Ben Ferrell. "It's one property subdivided into three."
The tracts are located at 1209 and 1215 Rio Grande St., and 605 W. 13th St. The tracts add up to about half an acre, and will cost the college $2.1 million plus closing costs.  Revenue bonds from 2009 will be used to cover the cost.

Bike blvd. paves way for student cyclists

Proposed plan would make biking near Rio Grande easier and safer

The City of Austin is currently reviewing a plan that that would turn Nueces Street from W. Third Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard into a bicycle boulevard.
A bicycle boulevard is a road that caters to both cars and bikes. Recently, plans for such a road have been discussed at two open houses. The third, and possibly last, will be taking place on Wednesday, Feb. 24, at Pease Elementary School. New findings about how traffic will be altered by the bike lane will be discussed.

College might move add/drop days

Changes to the registration schedule that would move late registration and the add/drop period to the week before the first day of class are being considered by the ACC administration.

Currently students have three days after the first class day to register for class and make changes to their schedule by adding and dropping courses. If the new schedule is approved, students would have to register and make all changes to their schedule before the first day of class.

Space Aces chosen for NASA microgravity experiment studying new free weights

The Austin Space Aces, along with fourteen other groups from schools around the nation, were chosen to test an experiment starting June 16 at Johnson Space Center in Houston.
Astronauts living in space have an issue of losing bone density, and the Austin Space Aces's experiment called Smart Resistive Exercise Device (SRED) for free weight simulation in microgravity is designed to alleviate that problem.

TEACH grant still not available for students, college working on deal with four year schools

Austin Community College's Financial Aid office is still unable to offer the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) grant to students.
The federal grant provides up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families. The grant was created in 2007 by Congress as part of its College Cost Reduction and Access Act.

Board of Trustee spots up for election

The Governmental and Community Relations office will begin taking candidate applications beginning Feb. 6 for the May ACC Board of Trustees elections. Board Place 3, Place 5, and Place 6 will all be up for election. These Trustees are elected at-large to oversee the entire ACC service area.

Potential candidates can already file an Appointment of Campaign Treasurer form that would allow them to legally begin raising funds for their campaign, but a candidate is not officially on the ballot until they fill out an application for a place on the ballot.

New semester of Austin Java Lit Gatherings starts this month

On Feb. 8, the Creative Writing Department will kick off its Spring 2010 Semester Literary Gathering. Students, whether they are in the Creative Writing Department or generally interested writers, are invited to attend this event at Austin Java Café at 12th and Lamar.

Gospel Extravaganza to be held at Eastview

Mandatory orientation policies still being ironed out

 Student orientation policies are still being changed and reworked as Student Life begins gearing up for the fall semester that will mark the beginning of mandatory three hour orientations for all new students.
Last semester proposals on how to accommodate this new policy included everything from dissolving certain Student Life clusters to simply cancelling traditional Student Life events.

Student Life wins International Gold Award for ad campaign

The Student Life media team has earned an international Gold Award from the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals. With almost 5,000 entries from throughout the United States and several foreign countries, the team's "Student life Stories" campaign made an impression with the judges.

Noyce Scholarship offers $31,000 for math and science

News Briefs

Students with a passion of math and science have a new opportunity for financial assistance through the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program. Austin Community College has partnered up with St. Edward's University to offer scholarships for math and science majors with at least 60 undergraduate hours. Students studying for an associate of arts in teaching at ACC are also able to apply. Other qualifications students will need for this project include a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and the minimum required hours standard by the beginning of the 2010 fall semester.


Former mayor, Reps, speak at CSPS welcome back event

The Center of Student Political Studies (CSPS) will be hosting their welcome back event on February third. The program will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Eastview Campus Multi-Purpose Hall in Building 8000.

The theme for the night is to inform ACC students on how to get involved in clubs, organizations, and charities in the community, and the benefits of being involved. The CSPS have invited guest speakers such as Texas Rep. Diana Maldonado, former Austin Mayor, Bruce Todd, and Peck Young, Director of Center of Public Policy and Political Studies.

Capitol Metro bus trips will be free to all students attending ACC next semester. Art Dept. lobbies for more space

Dept. head petitions for more space

A small exhibition space is being built in the remodeled gym at Rio Grande Campus, but Art Department Chair Gary Webernick said the department still needs a larger gallery. Webernick and the ACC Art Department are once again petitioning the ACC administration for more gallery space in which to display student and faculty art.

College hires faculty to keep up with growth

At the start of every fall semester, the Office of Human Resources starts collecting applications to fill faculty positions for the next fall semester. Around 30 full-time faculty members are needed in order to keep up with enrollment demands. The number of full antd part-time faculty hired is based on the ACC District Master Plan which is reviewed yearly and revised on a rolling three year schedule.

Austin Conservation Corps, a new organization created by ACC's Center for Public Policy and Political Studies (CPPPS), now offers students the job opportunities maintaining and building parks around Austin.

Donations accepted until Thanksgiving

This Thanksgiving, $25 will save a turkey's life.     

The Rio Grande Campus media center, room 225, is accepting donations on behalf of Farm Sanctuary's Adopt-A-Turkey Project.  Last year they sponsored three turkeys.  This year they hope for more.

The parking garage at Austin Community College's Rio Grande Campus was officially awarded a three star rating by the Austin Energy Green Building Program on Thursday, Nov. 19, at ACC's Great Big Green Get-Together. The garage is ACC's first green building.

Student Government forms new DREAM Act committee

News Brief

The Student Government Association (SGA) has formed a DREAM. Act Committee in order to study the effect of the DREAM act on undocumented students at ACC. This committee was formed after Jose Torres, President of the University of Leadership, a group that is trying to mobilize support for the DREAM Act at colleges, made a presentation about the DREAM act at an SGA meeting on Oct. 30.

The Rio Review literary journal hosts release party for authors

The Austin Community College student literary journal, "The Rio Review," will host its release party on Dec. 2. The journal features student poetry, fiction and non-fiction prose, and artwork. The journal is published every semester and this will be the 23rd issue.

Instructors recruit at festival

The Creative Writing department carved out its own niche at the Texas Book Festival.
Department Chair Charlotte Gullick was at the festival letting people know about the unique resource the department represents. ACC is one of a small number of community colleges in the nation to offer an Associate degree in creative writing.

Success workshops poorly attended

Each semester success workshops are provided to students in areas such as time management, eliminating stress and starting good financial habits. These are designed to improve a students performance in, and outside of their educational career.

Thousands of Texas jobs created, saved by stimulus

Federal stimulus money saved or created almost 4,000 education jobs in Texas according to a report by the US Department of Education (DOE).The report said Texas used almost $30 million of the stimulus money awarded to it by the DOE.

Austin has drastic need for health, tech grads

The Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce released its second annual progress report over the state of ACC last month. Despite enrollment rates already at a record high, the report recommends a drastic increase in the amount of graduates in health and technology related fields by 2015 in order to meet the Metropolitan Austin future workforce needs.

President Obama was greeted with applause and cheers when he finally stepped onto the stage at Rudder auditorium on Oct. 16 at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. The president was there to speak at the Presidential Forum on Service.

New regulations proposed on downtown panhandling

Ordinance would ban panhandling at all times in a greater area of town

 The Downtown Austin Alliance (DAA), along with several residential groups and downtown churches are proposing an extension of the existing ban on night time panhandling. Austin's current ordinance that regulates panhandling, the Austin City Solicitation Ordinance 9-4-13 originally adopted in 1992, allows non-aggressive panhandling, but includes restrictions on the time, place and manner in which solicitation may legally occur.

ACC has announced that the closure of the Pinnacle campus has been extended through Wednesday, Oct. 21. The college plans to re-open the campus on Thursday, Oct. 22.

Students voice complaints, ideas at trustee forum

ACC students at Riverside Campus advised college leaders on Oct. 13 as part of the ACC Student Forum hosted by the Student Government Association.

 The college representatives who attended were Trustee member Barbara Mink, Dean of Student Services Virginia Fraire, and Campus Manager Frank Taylor.

Veterans' GI Bill benefits delayed

Many veterans attending ACC have found it difficult to pay for books, rent and tuition this semester. Distribution of GI Bill benefits by the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) has been delayed and many ACC student veterans, as well as student veterans across the country, have yet to receive the money they are entitled to.
