If you’re not taking courses over the summer break, don’t waste your time being idle. Use that time to improve yourself, perhaps create new, positive habits or break old, unhealthy ones such as smoking cigarettes.

Natalie Nova

Nova's notes

It’s nearing the end of the semester and many students are growing restless, drifting through these final weeks in apathy. Sometimes it’s easy to forget the reason we’re all here — to learn. This is not only something we do in college, but something we should do every day for the rest of our lives and the biggest and most expansive avenue we have to do so is science.

Nova's notes

We’ve come so far in the fight for women’s rights that it seems absurd to regress to a society whose future is controlled predominantly by men. Lately, there have been strong campaigns against the legality and financial coverage of contraception, which if successful could be detrimental to the health of women all over America.

Nova's Notes

Religion, science and human rights... how are they related? One of them is constantly being used to harm the other two. Tolerance is such a key ideology to the future of humanity, and we can only benefit from it being widespread faithfully, scientifically and ethically.

Nova's Notes

Sometimes it's tough not to get caught up in the over- commercialized Hallmark holidays like Valentine's Day. Couples may feel obligated to be a little extra gushy than normal, and singles everywhere reflect on how single they are. For those who are looking for love or even to simply meet someone outside of their regular bubble of interactions, online dating has become an immensely effective tool in connecting people and expanding social horizons.

Nova's notes

It's a fresh new year, and with it comes a new team dynamic here at The Accent. Many of our editors are returning from last semester, but have taken on new roles, myself included. I welcome all Austin Community College students, faculty and staff back to campus for the spring 2012 semester as the new Editor-in- Chief of The Accent.

Memoirs of a veteran

It was “fifth week” in basic training. The following week was graduation. Sometime during the last few years, the Air Force decided there would be a fifth-week ceremony where all trainees receive the Airmen’s coin and officially become an Airman instead of a trainee.

Kristen Sauls

Memoirs of a veteran

Sometimes it’s still hard to believe I enlisted in the Air Force. I was one of the last people that anyone, including myself, expected to join.

kristen

Memoirs of a Veteran

I was stationed in Germany during the 2008 presidential election. It was the second one I voted in... or at least, thought I voted in. I found out later they don’t even count absentee ballots, which I can’t understand. The people whose lives are most impacted by political policies, who are stationed overseas in the name of our country, aren’t even included in the vote? Seriously?

kristen

From one veteran to another

There are two types of people who become Military Training Instructors (MTI) or drill sergeants as they are better know in the movies. The first type, hard-as-nails on the surface but soft and gooey on the inside, will yell and belittle in order to toughen trainees up and acclimate them to the military's stressful environment.

kristen

From one veteran to another

"One, two, three, four, let's wake up the Air Force!"

It was 5 a.m. Blind with sleep, I peered outside my third- story window; the entire Army detachment was doing jumping- jacks in unison a stone's throw from my bunk bed. It was early March at Fort Meade, Md., and the temperature was well below freezing.

Remembering safety important in high-risk situations, can train brain to react without thinking

A voice crackled over our handheld radio: "213 and 324: what is your location?" Staff Sgt. Brown asked. My desert bff, Noelle, and I were sitting in a dusty white pick-up truck in Iraq, waiting outside our housing compound to escort a fuel truck inside to refill the generators.

Dear DC,

dc

On my mind: new friendships

The semester is coming to an end, and between studying for classes you’ve probably given serious thought to what you’ll be doing in the summer. There are places to go, people to meet and things to see. But what you probably didn’t give that much thought to are the new friendships you’ve forged in the classes you just finished.

DC McLean

On my mind: kissing 101

Kissing has always been something that I enjoy. The reason I love it is because even though it can mean a lot of different things, they are all affectionate. In some countries a kiss is how someone says ‘hello’ or ‘goodbye.’ In almost any placeyou go to, a kiss is how you show someone affection, and at times, the most amazing kisses are a promise of more things to come. Kissing is so universal that I’m always astounded by the number of people who don’t know how to kiss properly. I will admit though, kissing is mutual so here are my top three tips for giving someone a mind-blowing kiss.

Tips for fun-filled road trips

Spring Break is right around the corner and if you're anything like me, between studying for midterms, you're most likely planning what you will do during the break. South by South West (SXSW) will be in town, but the event can be hectic and parking is impossible. You could always take a trip, but unless you're willing to fork over hundreds of dollars for a plane ticket, your best alternative for travel is taking a road trip with a couple of friends.

Dear DC,

I think sex is interesting. others say that I seem to be very passionate about the subject, but I think it's simply because it's everywhere. The media learned a long time ago that sex sells and because of this, they have no problem exploiting it for all it's worth. Sex is predominant in almost everything I see on television, almost every piece of music I hear and in almost every book I read. It is for this reason that I find myself to be in disbelief when I try to talk about sex with other people in a public place. If everyone has sex and if sex is so universal, why do people find it to be such a sensitive subject?

Editor-in-Chief says goodbye

When I first enrolled at Austin Community College in 2005 I felt like a fish out of water.

I was still adjusting to college life and I knew that I wanted to pursue journalism or photojournalism, but ACC's journalism program didn't look all that appealing to me considering there were only a handful of basic classes to choose from.

As a result, I enrolled in core curriculum classes and felt really bored and unchallenged until one day, after I had taken a year off from school to take care of my kids, I came across a MySpace post from my former high school newspaper adviser Matthew Connolly.

From one veteran to another

The military salute is supposed to be a gesture of courtesy and respect between enlisted personnel and officers, and even between officers of different ranks. It's such a big deal that in basic training they made us salute ourselves in the mirror before every meal. But mostly, it's just an inconvenience — for both enlisted and officers.

My home station was much larger than most bases; it housed both the NATO Allied Air Component Command Headquarters and served as the headquarters base to all Air

After the first complaint from members Ann and Nancy Wilson of the band Heart was issued, many would have thought that John McCain and Sarah Palin would have stopped using their music to promote the Republican ticket, but they continue to do so. Although the current spring semester is coming to a close very soon, there is a wealth of things that you can still find in order to prepare for upcoming semesters. The internet and mobile networking have a wealth of information, products, and applications that you can use to help make life easier for you in the academic world or in your social life. Blackboard Mobile is one of those applications.

Nathan

Study buddies, study breaks

Yet another semester is nearing its end at ACC and for a majority of people, the end probably couldn’t come sooner. After checking on grades to make sure we’ve all passed our courses, the next item on most everyone’s checklist is returning or selling unneeded textbooks. For some people this is a big problem for several reasons, including not being able to find a place to sell them.

nathan

Study Buddies, Study Breaks

While today’s technology has brought many innovations and advancements, there are still other forms of technology that have been around for years and have simply been updated for the current day and age. Books in audio form are one of those technologies that have been updated.

At times there are sites, services, or applications that serve a dual purpose in terms of helping college students in the academic realm or in their everyday lives. One particular example is the social news networking website reddit. com. There is a plethora of information you can obtain from the links available on Reddit, making it a very good source of information both for fun and entertainment as well as more serious subjects such as the classroom.

One of the most common things that happens to most college students getting back to school after an extended break is trying to regain the momentum and desire to get back into the grind of classes and schoolwork. The prospect of homework and major assignments doesn't help to kick-start that motivation. I'm here with another Study Buddies and Study Breaks column to help make that transition much easier for you.

The last few weeks of this semester are upon us and for most students that means that dreaded final exams are just around the corner. Love games

For Devon's Sake

It's every straight man's dream: The ability to walk up to a random woman on the street, strike up a conversation, and within minutes have her phone number. The only problem with that fantasy is how quickly it evaporates in the cruel light of reality.  Before most guys could even take a step in that woman's direction, their inner monologue kicks in, shutting them down with fears of rejection, inadaquency, and anxiety.

One more for the road

For Devon's Sake

The last time NBC replaced its "The Tonight Show" host, the behind the scenes wheeling and dealing was interesting enough to make a movie about. The Late Shift, the TV movie about Jay Leno and David Letterman's struggle for Johnny Carson's coveted seat, aired on HBO in 1996, four years after the dust had settled on the debacle. In 2009, however, media moves a bit faster, and the Internet has been lit up for the past few weeks with Youtube videos, non-stop Twittering and Facebook campaigns covering every aspect of the Conan O'Brien-Leno primetime shuffle. Whatever side you were on (for the record, I'm with Coco) the real core of the quagmire was never about Leno or Conan or any of the other late night hosts hopping on the NBC bashing bandwagon. No, the big issue is about bowing out gracefully, and American's frequent failure to do so.

And a happy New Year

For Devon's Sake

I've never been one for New Year's resolutions. Not that I'm opposed to the concept, I think it's good for people to evaluate their vices and set goals for self improvement. It's the follow-through that always seems to be lacking. So this year, rather than making a bunch of promises to myself that I will likely end up breaking, I'm going for New Year's wishes instead.

Halloween Costumes

When I was a kid, I loved Halloween. By the time I'd gotten down to the dregs of my candy haul, which took almost a month thanks to my parents' obnoxious insistence on "moderation," my brain was teeming with ideas for next year's costumes. The serious stages of costume design started as early as June when my mom and I would check out patterns and fabric at the craft store.

The following day, a Swedish court found the four men behind the infamous Pirate Bay file sharing web site guilty of contributory copyright infringement, levying a heavy fine and a year in prison against all four.

Slave to Ticketmaster

Dear Ticketmaster: Hey Ticketmaster, how's it going? Pretty good, I bet. It's almost summer and music fans across the country are getting ready to shell out big bucks for outdoor festivals, U2 concerts, and, of course, all the big reunion tours. Can you believe Phish is finally back together after five longs years? I know! But despite being in the midst of a rapidly worsening economic depression, concert tickets are more expensive than ever.

Sex-ed ignores modern issues

There were pamphlets, popcorn, and plenty of prophylactics to be had at the Student Life sponsored Sexual Responsibility day on Feb. 10. As one of the first generations to become sexually active in the 21st Century, we face a radically different sexual landscape than any of our ancestors.

Drunk Driving

Redress of Grievances

How many kids will you kill this Halloween? Austin is notorious for its legendary Sixth Street where any day can become a party day, especially among college students. It should then come as no surprise that, according to the Austin Police Department, 22 people were arrested last year for public intoxication citywide and 18 people were arrested for DUI/DWI citywide between the hours of 6 p.

National Coming Out Day

Redress of Grievances

When I first heard the genius idea of proposing an amendment to the U.S. Constitution defining marriage as between a man and woman only, I instantly had an image in my mind of a bunch of busy-body old women gossiping and pointing fingers at their neighbors because they were sad, tired people.

Bystanders are the missing youth vote

In two months, we will find out if this truly is a historic presidential election. Will the youth actually get out and vote? As a young voter myself, I certainly hope so. However, history has shown election after election, young voters typically tend not to vote.

Holiday Overkill

Redress of Grievances

Ahh, the holidays are just around the corner. And no, I'm not talking about Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve. I am, of course, referring to days like International Aura Awareness Day and National Name Your PC Day. According to Chase's Calendar of Events (which many consider to be the utmost authority on holidays, celebrations, and anniversaries), these are holidays that many actually celebrate and look forward to.

Local Politics

Redress of Grievances

In Jan. of this year, I attended the Williamson County Democratic Primary Convention. At the convention, there was much excitement over the upcoming presidential election. Speech after speech was primarily focused on the national candidates running for office with little regard given to local elections.

Redress of Grievances

In September of 2008 I attended the fall orientation for the Accent. Although I had been a student at ACC for about six months by then, I had yet to participate in any student activities. When I heard about the opportunity to be able to contribute to a newspaper, I was pretty excited.

Scholarships

Redress of Grievances

It's almost the end of the school year and although a lot of students are starting to feel relief that all their hard work has started to pay off, still one very important issue remains: paying for the next school year. Here in Austin there are several popular ways to get your money for nothing and your cheques for free or at least help you gain an education.

Graduation

Redress of Grievences

Soon it will be graduation time here at ACC. There is actually a light at the end of the whirlwind tunnel of exams, homework and long lectures. Come the end of the semester, many students will possess an associate degree or a technical certificate. Yet, some will choose not to walk across the stage at the Frank Erwin Center come May 14.

Consider the source

Redress of Grievances

Recently, I have been hearing a lot of talk on the idea that the media and the government are corrupt. It irritates me when people say that government officials never have good intentions, and it is such a simplistic view to say that politicians only look out for themselves.

College is not a game

Redress of Grievances

As a college student, one of the things I love best is the ability to be able to blame teachers for things that aren't their fault. Whenever I have a genuine interest in a class and I like my teacher, I will sing praises about the teacher and the class. I love going to class, enjoy doing the homework, and I give the class my best effort.

Sleeping off spring fever

Redress of Grievances

As most anyone who is in college knows, school can be pretty stressful. Fortunately for us, someone invited spring break. According to TripSmarter.com, spring break dates back to as far as Ancient Greeks, when people began noticing a sense of restlessness during the spring.

Student Loans

Redress of Grievances

ACC has spoiled me. The organizations are great, and I've somehow managed to schedule my classes on the same campus three semesters in a row. The truth is that my fondness for this place is because I can afford to attend it. The economy is down the drain.

Obama=Socialism

An old friend called me from London on Nov. 5 last year and said "what a fantastic day for America; we can all like them again now Obama won." He asked me what I thought and I asked him if he remembered the socialist UK government of Jim Callaghan. There was a pause for the thought, a tired sigh and all of a sudden the conversation made a left-turn, if you'll pardon the pun.

Presser disappoints

As I'm sitting here tapping away at the keyboard, way past deadline - and hoping my editor isn't going to flay me alive - I happened to tune into President Obama's maiden press conference and I sincerely wished I hadn't. It was perhaps the most dishonest display I've seen, well, since Obama last said something.

Say it like you mean it

When actor Christian Bale's astonishing outburst was unleashed on an unsuspecting public, the reputation of Hollywood celebrities was hardly unsullied. From unfortunates like Marilyn Monroe, survivors like Dennis Hopper, right through to mental midgets like Matt Damon; it's been a production line of dysfunction, idiocy and criminal self-indulgence.
