It’s Riverside Campus versus South Austin Campus, and the heat might be too much to handle. The winner steps into the ring with Northridge to battle for ultimate glory. Those of you keeping score at home may have noticed that the South Austin Campus slipped into the second round without competing in the first. Yes, there are an odd number of campuses so, South Austin Campus got a freebee pass during the first round. Once again we’re going to hear what the students think about their campuses.
There is a new mascot for ACC, but students won’t know what it is until later this month. As of Friday, April 2, voting for the Mascot, which was open to both students and members of the Austin community, officially closed. The four final ideas were Starblazers, Blazers, River Bats, and Bbhoggawacts.
The ACC chapter of the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education (TACHE) hosted their first ever Golf Fiesta. All proceeds from the tournament go toward providing scholarships to Latino students in need of financial aid. The event took place, Nov. 13, at the Riverside Golf Course next to the Riverside Campus.

The Diez y Seis de Septiembre Festival, hosted by ACC’s Center for Public Policy and Political Studies (CPPPS) and the Latino/Latin American Studies Center, “El Centro”, was celebrated on Wednesday, Sept. 16, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Riverside Campus.
The third annual Dia de la Familia, sponsored by the ACC Latino/Latin American Studies Center (El Centro), will be held on April 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Riverside Campus. The event aims to inform the community about ACC and El Centro in particular.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as well as Austin Energy and representatives from ACC will be attending the ceremony celebrating the completion of two solar panels, one on Riverside campus and one on Rio Grande. The ceremony is taking place Mar. 4 on the Riverside campus at 10 a.

Sigma Alpha Pi has several leadership events this semester, including speaker Tim Duffy and the Presidential Adviser Game. "It will be off the hook," said Student Life Coordinator Quevarra Moten. The Jewelry Department, located at the Riverside Campus, has been operating with 98-100 percent enrollment in all classes for the past five years. The department, which formed two years ago when it separated from the welding department, is in the same building with other metal working courses offered at Austin Community College.

School begins to offer classes over the weekend to complete degree
Here's some good news for both current and prospective Austin Community College students who have a hard time juggling their time between classes and their jobs: ACC now has weekend-only classes. Students can take core curriculum classes or earn a degree, while fulfilling career responsibilities during the week.
When one thinks of old buildings, does the word "asbestos" come to mind? It might have crossed your mind as you walked through the halls in some of the older Austin Community College campuses. Currently, the Rio Grande Campus and Pinnacle Campus are the only two campuses that have asbestos containing materials (ACM).
Former President Bill Clinton spoke to a crowd of over 1,000 people at Austin Community College last Wednesday, Feb. 27. Under a cloudless mid-afternoon sky at the Riverside Campus golf course, the former president spoke on behalf of his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign. During the event, he outlined the candidate's plans and experience, and explained why supporters should vote in the Texas primary and caucus, set for March 4.
Former ACC police officer sentenced to probation
It's called double dipping - taking pay for two shifts at once, or working a private security job while the police officer should be working on campus. It's not the social mistake of reaching for another dip after taking a bite. Robert Sanchez, a former Austin Community College Police Department lieutenant, was convicted March 10 of a third-degree felony theft of service for working off-campus jobs while on the clock.
Riverside's own Atia Willis talks about goals, being the queen of Austin
Recently crowned Miss Austin USA of 2008, Atia Willis has proved that she is Austin royalty. Willis attends Austin Community Colleges' Riverside Campus and majors in Marketing with hopes to transfer to the University of Texas. A native of Houston, Willis worked her way up from adolescent pageantry to the title of calling herself a "Miss.
Renewable Energy on the horizon
The Austin City Council has declared a renewable energy initiative committing Austin Energy to produce electrical power through solar and wind power. The initiative states that Austin Energy will be producing 100 megawatts of electricity in Austin by the year 2020.
A Diez Y Seis celebration was hosted by several groups at the Riverside campus on Sept. 16. The ACC Center for Public Policy and Political Studies, The Latino/Latin American Studies Center, the Student Success Center, and former state Sen. Gonzalo Barrientos all helped to put on the event.
Energy turns green this spring at ACC
The sunshine will be sprouting more "green" in Austin this spring with the building of a new solar panel at Austin Community College's Rio Grande Campus (RGC), as well as at the Riverside Campus (RVS). With recent approval from the Texas Historical Society (THS), ACC's plans for building and installation at RGC will soon be underway.
The Latino/Latin American Studies Center and the Latino American Student Organization hosted the Latin Dance Festival Nov. 29 at Riverside Campus. Features included instructional dance shops and presentations regarding specific dances from across the Spanish-speaking world.
On April 18, Riverside Campus was host to the Asian Spring Festival, organized by Student Life, the Foreign Languages Department, and the Society for East Asian Cultures. Events included the Austin premiere of the Korean film, "The King and the Clown," cultural performances and products available from Asian vendors.
Ruthie Alcaide, from MTV's 1999 "Real World Hawaii," will be at ACC's Riverside Campus on March 26 to discuss alcohol awareness. Alcaide entered rehab during the course of the show and learned firsthand the dangers of binge drinking. Alcaide attended frat parties under the age of 21 because she knew she could drink there and not in bars.
