The Intramural Sports and Recreation program made great progress last semester in terms of participation and student turn out, and is rocketing toward its first event.

"We're still able to use the venues that we've been using. It's really been great because we're getting bigger," Tracy Partin, head of the intramural program, said.

About 40 students have already signed up for the program, which is fantastic progress considering the first event is not until March.

The spring semester features many of the same sports as last semester, such as men's and women's basketball, men's and women's volleyball, and men's and women's soccer.

Although each sport had a great year, one of the bigger draws was men's basketball which had more than 70 members compete last year, and is expected to have 70 plus members again.

The basketball tournament, which had a large turn-out last semester, returns on April 14.

Men's soccer, which has "quietly gotten big," Partin said, sported 10 teams last season and is expected to be full again this semester.

"The women's team grew a little bit," Partin said, and they had five teams compete last year, so look for these two sports to become a large draw for both men and women.

While the intramural program is featuring many of the same sports, some new events are also in the works.

Partin said that there are two events being planned — a 5K run that would be held at the Round Rock campus, and a campus-wide soccer tournament featuring a couple of teams from each campus.

No finite details are available for these events right now, but check the announcement boards and the Student Life website for updates as the season progresses.

Along with these new events, the Student Life staff will have the opportunity to avenge their losses to the students in last semester's annual staff vs. student kickball and volleyball games.

The growth of intramural sports at ACC in the past year has allowed more students the chance to make lifetime memories and friends.

Additional benefits include exercise which helps students stay in shape and even prepare for sports opportunities at other universities.
