SXSW Day Six: Its just a little scary-Insidious film review
3/19/11 9:41 PM
Today was my final day at the South by Southwest film festival and I have to say it has been a truly amazing, humbling experience. I have gotten to see so many great movies and meet some of the wonderful masterminds behind the scenes including aspiring directors, producers, and filmmakers-all of whom are trying to make a name for themselves and get their voices heard. The last film I would like to review is the supernatural thriller, Insidious, starring Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne. The director James Wan, also directed the famously gory, horror movie, Saw. Luckily, when I went to see the eerie midnight screening, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Insidious, while a great movie in its own right, is nothing like its Saw counterpart- there are no...SXSW Film Day Five: Review and interview with Director Matt D'Elia for film American Animal
3/16/11 4:27 PM
The movie American Animal, starring Matt D’ Elia and Brendan Fletcher, tells the story of Jimmy(D’ Elia) and James(Fletcher), two roommates whose wealthy parents have provided the necessities for the boys every want, desire, and needs. It looks like they have a seemingly perfect life, until Jimmy becomes terminally ill. As Jimmys physical health starts to deteriorate, he starts becoming mentally insane in order to cope with his illness. The movie centers around one night, when the rational character James, decides to stop living freely off of his parents income and gets a job, causing Jimmy to out-lash against him. Their two friends, “Blonde Angela” played by Mircea Monroe, and “Not Blonde Angela” acted by Angela Sarafyan, also...SXSW Film Festival Day Four: One documentary rocks out while another inspires personal connections
3/14/11 11:32 PM
Its my fourth day at the South By South West Film (SXSW Film) Festival. I have to say all of the films so far have been pretty amazing, and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the many more interesting and original screenings in the following days to come. The first movie I watched was part of the narrative feature competition. Small, Beautifully Moving Parts, directed by Annie J. Howell & Lisa Robinson, is centered around a woman named Sarah, who is completely immersed in the technology that consumes her life. Once Sarah finds herself pregnant, life completely changes. Instead of relying on electronic devices as the main form of communication in her life, she sets out on a journey to re-connect with her estranged mother. On the way, she comes...SXSW Film Day Three: Comparison of documentaries featuring Conan O'Brien and Morgan Spurlock
3/13/11 9:55 PM
For the third day of my South By South West Film Fest venture, I decided to stay close to the Paramount theater, in order to see two big name documentary features: the world premiere of Rodman Flender’s film Can't Stop and Morgan Spurlock’s The Greatest Movie Ever Sold. Can't Stop follows the journey Conan O’Brien takes on his national 32-city concert tour after being let go from The Tonight Show, hosted by NBC in 2010. O’Brien said he was on a contract with NBC, that would not allow him to appear on any cable network programs for six months. This ban was the driving force behind his tour, Legally Prohibited From Appearing on Television and fueled O’Brien’s passion to stick to the tours rigorous schedule, which...SXSW Day Two: Film review of Narrative Feature Happy New Year
3/13/11 1:55 AM
For my second day of the South By Southwest Film Festival(SXSW Film) I headed over to the State Theatre located on the corner of Congress and 8th street, to catch the World Premiere of Happy New Year. The film, directed by K Lorrel Manning, is up for best Dramatic Narrative for the 2011 SXSW film competition. The movie tells the story of Sgt. Cole Lewis, a marine who served four tours in the Iraqi war. After a tragic mishap leaves him paralyzed during his last tour, the Sergeant is forced to return home. He finds himself battling with the struggles of his new life while living in the psychiatric ward of a Veterans Hospital. According to Manning, after reading the descriptive interviews that detail veterans experiences during the Iraqi war in the book by Author Nina...
