Art Outside

Imagine a time when festivals were held in the woods, far from the town common. Where men and women walked around in costumes, children and dogs ran amuck, artists displayed their talents and wares, poets stood on tree stumps and espoused eulogies of grandeur, musicians of various genres filled the air with melodies both somber and triumphant, jugglers juggled, dancers danced, metallurgists worked metal and fire dancers danced fire.

To find such a gathering of intrigue and entertainment, one generally has to pay copious amounts of money to attend a Renaissance Festival, or travel a great distance to participate in a Rainbow Gathering.

However, Austin, true to its motto of self-ascribed weirdness, has become home to Art Outside, a six day gathering of a large array of artists and patrons thereof.

From pastels and watercolors to animal bone sculptures and Barbie destructions, for six days (March 23 to 26 and March 31 to April 2) Art Outside was home to over 150 artists and thousands of spectators.

Its second year running, Art Outside has defined itself as something worth marking the calendar a year in advance.
