What better way to bring students together than with free food? One event managed to do just that.

The Taste of the South was held in the student lounge at the Northridge campus on Feb.16. The free event was held for students and staff to honor Black History Month. Faculty at the campus prepared all the food for the students.

Before getting started, Sergeant Donald E. Seamster, head of security at the campus, introduced head of student services, Dr. Harris Bell, to speak briefly about black history and the relevance of Black History Month. Afterwards, Seamster led the crowd in a pre-meal prayer.

There were several main courses presented, and the food was everything southern. There was smoked turkey, chicken wings and ribs cooked to such perfection that the meat slid right off the bone.

Side dishes included green beans, black beans and potato salad. One side dish prepared was a style of spinach salad from Ghana, Africa. Included with the spinach was some meat all served on top of rice.

To make the event a complete southern experience, a side of cornbread was also served. And as the thirst built up, the only quencher in sight were cans of Big Red soda. A perfect way to wash down all the southern goodness.
