The Northridge campus held a school-wide health fair on Jan. 24 to kick off the spring semester. The fair provided students with information and ideas to keep their lives active.
"We want to educate students and give them resources to tell students your health is important," said Jennifer Flowers, South Austin Campus Student Life Coordinator.
The fair offered free food and the opportunity for students to talk with various local organizations. These organizations ranged from the Austin Cycling Association - which was on hand to recruit new members - to the Travis County Attorney's Underage Drinking Prevention Program.
The office of Student Life began the health fairs earlier this semester. They are primarily funded by student activity fees. Depending on their success, the fairs could potentially grow over the coming years.
Northridge is not the only campus at which the fairs will be conducted. Fairs will eventually be held at each ACC campus, with the biggest anticipated to be at Eastview on Feb. 13.
To keep the healthy theme going, the office of Student Life has created several extracurricular activities in which students can participate. For the first time, students can sign up for golf lessons, play kickball and also take self defense classes. These activities are all free and once again covered by student activity fees.
Dr. Louella Tate, ACC Dean of Student Services, sees the expansion of student life activities as positive. She said the events allow students to explore various interests and develop their leadership skills.
"Student Life is a wonderful supplement to ACC's numerous educational opportunities," Tate said.
