Emo's Lounge
603 Red River St.
Emo's definitely lives up to its reputation during SXSW and I don't blame them. What other venues provide great lines every day of the week for all ages? I especially like the Emo's Lounge shows. They mainly showcase local bands that are trying to get their name out but have great potential. It's a great place to check out those hidden gems people will be talking about in a couple of years.
Chugging Monkey
219 E. Sixth St.
SXSW is the only time of the year I go into this small bar. The two levels give the crowd more room to watch the shows and the lighting is amazing for live show photography. I can't wait to see who they have playing this year.
Monkey Wrench Books
110 E. North Loop Blvd.
This political bookstore knows how to put together some shows. I've seen great bands there.
Mohawk
912 Red River St.
There is always a wait and a long line to get into the Mohawk. But it's always worth it once you get in. Normally bloggers and various media publications book this venue for their shows, so all the bands performing have a pretty big following. Whether it's inside or outside, the shows are always fun.
Clementine Coffee Bar
2200 Manor Rd.
This coffee shop is a ways away from downtown which affects the walk-in attendance to their shows, but the environment is always welcoming. The majority of the bands I've seen here range from indie bands that make you want to get up and dance to folk bands that sing songs with strong messages.
