A 20-year-old Austin Community College student was the victim of an on-campus aggravated robbery, after a man followed her into an Eastview Campus bathrom and threatened
her with scissors.
The woman said she was followed from the EVC parking
lot into the Health Sciences Building bathroom where the unidentified man wielded the weapon. Her wallet and car - a 2007 black Hyundai - were stolen.
The incident occurred Oct. 15 at approximately 8:20 p.m., and the suspect has not yet been found. Campus police repeatedly refused Accent's requests for a description of the assailant.
Despite this recent event, records show ACC campuses have seen a steady decline in the total number of reported crimes over the past seven years - from 59 in 2001 to 3 in 2006. The robbery is the first case of violent crime at the Eastview Campus since at least 2001, according to records dating back to that year.
In October of last year, student Rita Pena was found by campus police after being stabbed multiple times while walking to her car from an evening
Rio Grande Campus math class. Police later apprehended Reginald Cooper, also an ACC student and resident of the Gary Job Corps developmental program, after they discovered a cell phone he left at the crime scene.
Police sources have said that there are plans to install emergency call boxes and security cameras on and around campuses.
Assistant Chief Lynn Dixon said the investigation into the incident at EVC is ongoing.
