Four seats on the Austin Community College Board of Trustees will be up for vote in May 10 municipal elections.
The six-year terms of Lillian Davis (Place 1), Nan McRaven (Place 3), and John Hernandez (Place 2) will expire this year. In addition, Place 5 is up for election because current member Rafael Quintanilla will vacate his position after moving out of the district he represents.
McRaven is the only incumbent seeking re-election. She is unopposed in the race. Elected in 2002, McRaven has been holding the vice chair of the board. She is also a former vice president of the Austin Chamber of Commerce.
Also unchallenged are John-Michael Cortez in Place 2 and Raul Ruben Alvarez in Place 5. The sole contested race is in Place 1 where Tim Mahoney, Harrison Keller, and Mike Reid are running.
Mahoney's website listed local supporters, including Progressive Citizens for Austin Community College and the ACC American Federations of Teachers Local 6249.
Keller's site listed proposed solutions ranging from maintaining a competitive salary for the teaching staff to increasing involvement with the K-12 public dual enrollment programs.
According to an Austin Chronicle article, Reid, currently an ACC student and Parliamentarian for the Student Government Association, cites a need for a student voice to be on the board and he supports the transition from traditional textbooks to digital books.
The Board of Trustees is in charge of making sure that the college is addressing the community's needs. The trustees are elected by the people of Austin, and other surrounding Independent School Districts.
